QHS student, Jackson Worley is the inaugural recipient of the Short Black Opera scholarship to support a young Indigenous instrumentalist.

Jackson, a Year 11 student a young Kamilaroi man is an aspiring cellist and composer who submitted an outstanding application for the inaugural presentation of the ‘One Day In January scholarship’.

Jackson Worley has been studying the Cello for seven years and aims to one day be a music producer.

As the recipient of this award, Jackson will travel to Melbourne in January 2021 to participate in the annual ‘One Day In January’ Summer Intensive program and join members of Ensemble Dutala for their 2021 program of performances.

Short Black Opera has established Australia’s first all Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander chamber ensemble known as Ensemble Dutala (Dutala is from the Yorta Yorta language meaning Star Filled Sky).

The aim is to promote excellence in instrumental training and opportunity (long term) for aspiring and talented ASTI musicians.

Noongar man, Aaron Wyatt has been appointed as Artistic Director and brings to the group the skills and knowledge of an instrumentalist, conductor and academic.

Next year Aaron will appear as soloist with the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra at their 2021 Season Gala in a new work by Yorta Yorta composer Deborah Cheetham AO.

The  ‘One Day In January scholarship’ was initiated to celebrate the launch of Ensemble Dutala.
