Did you know Australian Aboriginal languages consist of around 800 dialectal varieties belonging to an estimated 28 language families and isolates?
“Language is more than just a means to communicate, it is an important social function and fosters feelings of group identity and solidarity. It is the means by which culture, beliefs, customs as well as traditions and shared values can be both conveyed and preserved,” said QHS Aboriginal Community Liaison Officer, Megan Outerbridge.
This term, QHS continues to share its learning of our local Gamilaraay language.
Today, QHS Support Unit student Benjiman Nean presents the Gamiaraay word ‘BANDAARR’ meaning ‘Kangaroo’.
Well done Benjiman, it is daunting speaking to camera and you did very well sharing your cultural learning with pride.
