OCHRE PAINTING

school

This week, QHS Year 9 English students enjoyed a sunny afternoon ‘Ochre Painting’ during one of their ‘Aboriginal Education’ lessons.

Students ground down the clay-like ochre, mixed it with water and painted their faces and their story on the wall outside in ‘Hughie’s’ area, as MegO shared traditions and culture from the Gamilaraay.

Teacher, Mrs Schofield, who has been working with QHS ACLO, MegO to incorporate this learning into the classroom said this hands-on practical experience with MegO  has changed the dynamics in the class and brought the students closer together as a whole.

“The improved relationships among students in the classroom has assisted with their learning in all areas of study in English,” added Mrs Schofield.

The class have also previously learned ‘Gamilaraay’ language and are looking forward to a lesson next term participating in traditional cooking together.

Thank you to MegO for your sharing of culture and understanding amongst the whole QHS community and well-done Mrs Schofield and students.
