A TASTE OF AVATION LIFE

A TASTE OF AVATION LIFE

While many of us were relaxing over the recent holidays Year 11 QHS student, Sam Straney was busy attending an Aeronautical Engineering workshop.

Held at Tamworth airport through AviSkills and coordinated through Tamworth TAFE, Sam attended the weeks training to find out more about the aviation industry.

“In the future, I hope to be working in the industry, either flying planes or building them,” said the student who is no stranger to air travel having spent 12 months in Sweden last year – Sam flew to six other countries in that time.

Knowledge on aeroplane engines, the science behind the flight process and engineering required are all covered in the course.

“I really enjoyed all of the experience, but getting to go onto the planes and see first-hand how they operate gave me a great deal of knowledge.”

Sam was able to inspect and study some 10 turbo propelled planes as part of the course, including 2 smaller domestic planes, a gyrocopter, plus and former Australian Airforce jet.

“I would like to thank Tamworth TAFE for running Aeroskills through AviSkills – who specialise in Aviation Maintenance and Engineering training.”

With an airside multimillion dollar training facility, AviSkills has large practical workspaces with aircraft and other aircraft components. The Facility was established in Tamworth, northern NSW, in 2001 in response to the national and international forecast shortages of skilled, qualified aircraft maintenance engineering workers.

This is the first step in the course for Sam, who will undertake a further weeks study in the subsequent two school holidays.

“My Mum found out about the courses and my QHS Careers Advisor, Ms Saunders helped me enrol, I’m grateful to both,” concluded Sam.

Well done Sam for taking initiative to obtain the study opportunity you need for your career of the future.
