QHS hosted two ambassadors from the University of Newcastle today.
Karla Ingua and Georgia Hutton presented to senior students on what they should consider when applying for Uni.
“We are hosting an ‘Open Day’ on August 28th at two of our Newcastle campuses and encourage you to attend,” said Karla.
Some key points from the presentation included:
• UAC applications are open and now only cost $70.00 - after September that increases to. $200.00.

• ATAR Australian Tertiary Assessment Rank

• Adjustment factors - QHS automatically get 5 points as rural and regional school.
• Selection Rank - ATAR plus adjustments.
• Recommended Studies - subjects relevant to a degree that will be helpful with studies.
• Students can take bridging courses.
• University semesters differ to school with Uni having 2x 13-week semesters - and limited time on campus enabling students time to find work.
• UoN offers over 100 different Degrees across their 3 campuses.
• UoN more ore than 100 partner universities across the globe – accessible after covid.
• 90% of Undergraduate Degrees offer work integrated placement.
Students were encouraged to apply for UAC - UAC.edu.au

There was a discussion about ‘Open Foundation’ – a pathway entry that offers students the academic tools required to study at university.
As well as discussions around:
• Early Entry
• School Recommendation Scheme
• Year 12 Subject Spotlight
Support and services, through the university available to students include:
student information hubs, on campus security, career guidance and advice, student mentors, free legal advice and much more.
How to pay for university options included:
• HECS
• Scholarships
• Living Expenses - start saving and or plan for working
“Filter the Scholarships and apply for several scholarships at one time.
Start looking at the process now, it’s a worthwhile investment and planning ahead,” said Georgia.
All students were given a copy of UoN prospectus and encouraged to look at career opportunities and have a think about what career path would suit them.
