YEAR 8 DEBATE

school

QHS Junior Debate team took on Armidale Secondary College.

The QHS team, comprising of first speaker, Lachlan Stenner, second speaker, Sophie Boorer, third speaker, Ehsaas Gurjal and fourth speaker, Roy Peatling, were affirmative for the topic: “That students should be banned from using smartphone and personal devices at school”, QHS took the affirmative.

Both teams had well considered and organised arguments.

“Our team discussed the current systems in place, the implementation of our model, the impact of technology use on students and alternative solutions to the current issues faced by teachers and students when it comes to smartphones and personal devices. Quirindi High fought hard but unfortunately came out of the debate unsuccessful,” said QHS teacher and Debate Coach, Mrs Church.

Over the last two terms, the young team has shown a vast improvement in their skills in debating.

“With the help of friendly debates with our Year 9 team and coaching from our Year 11 team, we have seen progress in the way the team plans and delivers their arguments,” continued Mrs Church.

Mrs Church added she is extremely proud of the team and their commitment to the Premiers Debating Challenge.

“The students have regularly completed meetings and research in their own time. Well done.”
